Alexandre Magnan

Senior Researcher in "adaptation to climate change" at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI-Sciences Po)

Alexandre K. Magnan is a senior researcher on adaptation to climate change at the Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales (IDDRI-Sciences Po). His research focuses on the analysis of the main factors influencing the vulnerability of societies in recent decades, on the risk of maladaptation to climate change, on the identification of "adaptation trajectories", on the evaluation of adaptation progress (for example in the context of the implementation of a global adaptation target), and on the analysis of transboundary risks. It is particularly interested in coastal areas, especially those of small islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. He uses expert judgement methods to develop work on the evaluation of future risks and adaptation efforts and strategies at various territorial scales.

Alexandre holds a PhD in geography (2005, University of Montpellier 3) and a habilitation to direct research (2018, University of La Rochelle). He is an author of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Special Report on Oceans and Cryosphere in 2019, and Sixth Assessment Report in 2022) and the UNEP Adaptation Gap Report. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the World Adaptation Science Programme.
