Pascal Yiou studied at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, then went on to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics, where he focused on the statistical properties of strange attractors, such as the climate system. He developed a comprehensive framework for studying climate variability on a Quaternary timescale. Since 2000, he has focused on extreme weather events and their statistical modeling. He was a pioneer in the conditional attribution (to atmospheric circulation) of extreme events.
Currently, he is particularly interested in methods for simulating unprecedented events, especially using artificial intelligence. He has coordinated numerous ANR and European projects and was awarded an ERC grant. He is currently a research director at the Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Sciences (LSCE).
