Larry Vernon Hedges

Larry V. Hedges is Board of Trustees Professor of Statistics and Data Science; Education and Social Policy; Psychology; and Medical Social Sciences, and a Faculty Fellow of the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University. He is best known for his work on statistical methods for meta-analysis and its applications to evidence-based policy. He has also worked on the design of social experiments, the assessment of student achievement nationally and cross nationally, and the role of uncertainty in basic models for cognition in psychology

Professor Hedges has authored or co-authored 17 books and 250 journal articles, including the seminal Statistical Methods for Meta-Analysis (with I. Olkin, Elsevier, 1985) and The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis, 3rd edition (with H. Cooper and J. Valentine, Russell Sage, 2019), and Designing Educational and Social Experiments (Russell Sage, 2026).

He is an elected member of the National Academy of Education and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Statistical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Educational Research Association. Professor Hedges was appointed by President Obama to the Board of Directors of the National Board for Education Sciences and chair from 2016 to 2019. He is the 2018 winner of the Yidan Prize for Education Research and the José Vasconcellos World Award for Education from the World Culture Council in 2023.
